Advanced technology for a compact, low energy expenditure wiped surface crystalliser system (wscs)

To develop a new wiped surface crystalliser system, which produces liquid slurry ice using innovative technology. The product will have small dimensions making it suitable for installation in supermarkets and fishing vessels, thus using a minimum amount of valuable space.

THE AIM OF THE PROJECT: To develop a new miniature Wiped Surface Crystallizer System, which produces liquid slurry ice using innovative technology. THE NEED: The major need that the product addresses is the environmental need. The premise has been based on the assessment research at CRYTECH into both environmental legislation and market trends. Leaking refrigerants from supermarket display cases are a major cause of ozone depletion, second only to air conditioners in vehicles. The typical supermarket leaks about 1,500 pounds of refrigerants annually. This is a huge problem. In addition to the environmental damage, the significant loss of refrigerant has a substantial economical cost - not only the cost of the replacement refrigerant itself, but also the cost of the services of the refrigeration technician that refills the refrigerant and adjusts the system. Chilling the fish and seafood to 0 degrees Celsius, as rapidly as possible, is the single most important factor to insure top quality products. Even when the seafood is to be frozen, rapid chilling is critical for quality. For fresh products, delays of a few hours can shorten the shelf life by several days. This may vary depending on the temperature of the water from which the fish were captured and the size of the fish. Unless supplied by ice, produced on-shore, all fishing vessels need refrigeration equipment onboard. The quality standards being required by the markets in the developed countries are very specific as demonstrated by HACPP in the U.S.A. and ISO 9000 in the European Community. Because of demands for high quality, if fishermen want to market or export their products to these markets, they must have the ability to rapidly lower the temperature of their catch. This requires small dimensions for onboard refrigeration systems. THE PRODUCT The product is a compact, versatile, reliable and economical Wiped Surface Crystalliser System (WSCS) for the production of Bubble Slurry Ice - a mixture of very fine crystals, gas bubbles and liquid. The technology will be based on Volumetric Crystallisation by Cooling (VCC), claimed and patented by CRYTEC LTD. The new product will be used on fishing boats, in marketable areas such as supermarkets, and in new generations of air-conditioning units. These will require a low use of refrigerants in accordance with environmental legislation, and low energy expenditure. Furthermore we intend to use the technology as a tool for medical applications where rapid and even cooling is needed.
