Excellence in water management

Gea is an interoperable irrigation management platform accessed via the web, which aims to modernise and optimise water irrigation management systems. Gea is an information system with decision support and can communicate with any remote device.

GEA has been designed as a consequence of the following situation: * Low efficiency (only 30%) in the use of water resources destined to irrigate (up to 70% of total water resources), with a special impact on Mediterranean countries, up to 80-90%. * Deficiencies in current irrigation systems, often adaptations of systems developed for other purposes, rigid and inefficient, only for administrative management, linked to a single manufacturer and technologically obsolete (steps back from the state-of-the-art). In order to solve this problem, the GEA irrigation management platform will be developed by means of extending Information Technologies over irrigation systems. The main features of this platform will be: - Ubiquitous Web access to platform services & information - platform services could be accessed on line from anywhere, anytime, and using any device that has Internet access (mobile phones, PDA (Personal Digital Assistant), PC (Personal Computer), Pocket PC). - Interoperable and modular - the Information System will work separately from the Remote Control and Telemetric System, integrated with remote control systems available in the market. To obtain this, an implementation of the Communication Layer will be developed. This implementation will translate the protocol of new devices into a language that can be understood by the Information System. - Decision support based on models of knowledge - created combined knowledge from irrigation experts and information based on environmental assessments (such as crop historical data and the history of consumers). GEA users will have access to a powerful database information system that manages irrigation. GEA offers: 1) an accessible and usable Web interface that runs on any portable device, 2) a Geographical Information System (GIS), compatible with portable devices too, 3) a Decision Support System and 4) a Communication Layer which abstracts the Remote Control and Telemetrics System from the Information System. 1) The Web interface provides access to all the functionalities of the irrigation platform. Each user is given a customised view of the system according to their profile and needs for content and presentation (layout). An extra effort would be made to make the interface usable to users with different digital skills. 2) The Geographical Information System (GIS) will provide an added value as an alternative way of representing information to the user in a graphical format, displaying the topography of the waternet and its different elements. The GIS allows quick visualisation, supervision and control of all elements in the waternet. 3) Decision Support. The GEA platform would encapsulate the knowledge of irrigation management experts in a set of algorithms that would optimise the use of irrigation water. Applying the experts' knowledge to the information stored in the system, GEA would assist users in the decision-making process. In addition, the system would offer the user the possibility to define user agents that perform certain actions when a certain condition is met (for instance, close irrigation valves if it rains). 4) Communication Layer. Enables communication of the Information System with the Remote Control and Telemetrics System. The Communication Layer offers an abstraction of the Remote Control and Telemetrics System to the Information System. This means that devices and communication systems could evolve in the future, and the Information System would remain the same, yet still be able to communicate with the environment. The potential impact of incorporating a new device to the system is limited to a simple adaptation of the communication layer.
