To develop measurement equipment and software for the construction aggregates industries and to some extent other mineral-based material industries.

The overall aim of the PETROSCOPE II project is to develop an optoelectronic (photonics) instrument and software for construction aggregate industries - e.g. quarries, asphalt and concrete producers, testing agencies - and related mineral-based material industries. The instrument is for measuring the fundamental properties of size, shape and composition, while the software is for modelling and simulating the engineering and performance properties like abrasive resistance, strength, packing and bulk density of raw material and added value composite materials. The Work Packages and Tasks of the PETROSCOPE II project are as follows: WORK PACKAGE I - PROJECT MANAGEMENT. Objectives: Project planning and the timely and effective completion of the project. Dissemination of results. Task I-1: Project group meetings. Task I-2: Conferences, reports and publications. WORK PACKAGE II - OFF-LINE MEASURING EQUIPMENT. Objectives: Development of new or expanded versions of off-line measuring equipment for petrographic and geometrical analysis. Task II-1: User Requirements. Task II-2: Algorithms and software. Task II-3: Industrial and mechanical design. Task II-4: Photonics. Task II-5: On-site evaluation. WORK PACKAGE III - ON-LINE MEASURING EQUIPMENT. Objectives: The development of measuring equipment for on-line or semi-online testing of aggregates and related matter. Task III-1: User Requirements. Task III-2: Algorithms and software. Task III-3: Industrial and mechanical design. Task III-4: Photonics. Task III-5: Sampling system. Task III-6: On-site evaluation. WORK PACKAGE IV - TESTING AND SIMULATION SOFTWARE. Objectives: The development of software for simulation of particle packing and expansion of a statistical testing software for the engineering properties and performance of aggregates. Task IV-1: User Requirements. Task IV-2: Simulation software. Task IV-3: Prediction software. WORK PACKAGE V - MEASURING EQUIPMENT FOR RECYCLED AND SECONDARY AGGREGATES. Objectives: The development of a version of the measuring equipment for analysing recycled and secondary aggregates. Task V-1: User Requirements. Task V-2: Compositional description system. Task V-3: Sample selection and testing. Task V-4: On-site evaluation. WORK PACKAGE VI - METROLOGY AND VALIDATION. Objectives: The definition of the metrological characteristics of PETROSCOPE and description of the optoelectronic test methods. Validation and evaluation of the accuracy of the test methods. Task VI-1: User Requirements. Task VI-2: Test method description. Task VI-3: Metrological characteristics. Task VI-4: Validation. Task VI-5: Standardisation by CEN (Centre Europeen pour la Normalisation). Each project partner is expected to benefit from the project through synergetic effects and added value, leading to enhanced capabilities in dealing with other RTD (Research and Technological Development) projects in fields related to the PETROSCOPE II project.
