Interactive dvd (digital versatile disk) board game

To develop a working prototype for an interactive dvd board game connected to a dvd player or a tv via the internet. This entails transforming the dvd board game's paradigm into a totally new and enhanced user experience.

The Project aim is to develop an interactive DVD board game connected to a DVD ((Digital Versatile Disk) player or a TV (Television) via the Internet or cable. This entails transforming the DVD Board Game's paradigm into a totally new and enhanced user experience - Board Games that automatically interact with DVD titles, and provide real-time TV feedback to each Board Game player's manoeuvre. Board games have been very popular and we all know games such as Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Who wants to become a millionaire, etc. The idea is to connect these games to TV where the questions and pictures relating to what needs to be answered or solved appear on the TV screen. 3-PLUS is experienced in working with this technology as the company has already successfully established the brand 'DVD-kids' and the technology it is based on worldwide. This new idea will in part be built on the 'DVD-kids' technology but it is necessary to develop supplements to it. These technical supplements, as a part of the project, mainly involve interactivity to and from the board game and handling of the communication sent back and forth. The project will develop a prototype that fulfils certain minimum demands set out for introducing it to the partners of 3-PLUS. Among our partners are FISHER-PRICE SMOOBY, HIT ENTERTAINMENT, DISNEY and NORDISK FILM. Advantages of an Interactive DVD Board Game: 1. A whole new experience for Board Game players - the TV automatically reacts to their playing manoeuvres. 2. Complete synchronisation between the Board Game manoeuvres and images displayed by the DVD player. 3. The DVD player via the TV becomes the focus of the game by truly narrating, managing, scoring and presenting the performance of each player. The new type of board would become a smart interface that communicates directly with the content of a DVD disc. The main novelty aspect is that the control unit box is not only an emulation of a regular DVD player remote control but an enhanced interface that processes the data received from the board game and triggers events on the DVD player according to the game play. Therefore the level of interactivity is highly enhanced even though the whole system requires only a standard low cost consumer DVD player to operate. By using the control unit, many features can be achieved such as per-player settings and pre-sets at the beginning or during the game, tracking of each players action and history, management of levels of strength, health, inventory or points in role playing games, and performance in sport based games, etc. Because the interaction between the board and the DVD player is processed by the control unit, it is also possible to implement features like simultaneous action of several players and hidden actions (with per-player set of buttons under a lid for example), allowing a player to make the game play without the other players knowing his or her moves. Because of the software-enabled board (IC - Interface Connector - embedded in the board) and the processor of the control unit box, the DVD player provides access not only to linear video clips but also to actual interactive mini-games within the main game. The overall gaming experience becomes a balanced mix of the traditional well known board game strategy and multimedia interactive activities on television, in DVD video and sound quality. The inspiration is not to play on screen what could be achieved with cards, dices and such accessories, but to extend the possibilities of board games and integrated multimedia games. The control box unit also acts as the ultimate referee and game master as it knows the exact rules of the game in progress as well as the past and current actions of the players during the game play.
