Plasma reactor for processing materials with adverse effects on the environment

To construct an experimental plasma reactor capable of processing (recycling and energetically utilising) waste materials from the metallurgical and chemical industry, electronic waste, and waste from the pharmaceutical industry and health sector.

The most common method of disposing of waste today is dumping and burning. These methods of disposal lead to irreplaceable losses of materials from waste, including precious non-ferrous metals. These methods for disposing waste have very adverse impacts on the environment leading to long-lasting damage. The ecologic effect is one of the key points in making the decision regarding the preparation and realisation of the project. The aim of the Association is to create a testing plasma melting device capable of processing solid waste containing precious and non-ferrous metals mainly from the disposal and recycling of waste from electronic and electric devices (WEED). Other types of processed waste would include used car and industrial catalytic converters, and skimming containing precious metals, including the waste from the industrial processing of precious metals by the main member - SAFINA A.S. The project is expected to be carried out according to the following schedule: - Research and primary testing carried out with a laboratory plasma device belonging to one of the members - TU KOSICE - in order to obtain basic information on the possibilities of processing various types of materials as well as technological parameters and data necessary for construction of an experimental device - mobile plasma unit. - Preparing the project, including drawing up documentation and specifications of materials for the construction of a mobile plasma unit - experimental device. - Construction of an experimental plasma reactor as a mobile packaged unit. - Carrying out technological trial runs with an experimental plasma reactor with various pre-selected types of materials, evaluation of results and processing of outcomes as the basis for the project aim - construction of a commercial plasma stationary unit with the desired capacity of processing 1,000 tons of waste materials per year. Within the scope of the research part of the project, the plan is to test the possibilities of processing various types of waste as well as to define the basic technological parameters for the design of an experimental plasma unit and its construction. After this, trial runs will be carried out with this experimental device and the conditions for processing various types of waste will be examined as well as the technological and construction data for specifying the project for a commercial plasma device and for preparation of the project in the form of construction documentation. Preparation of construction documentation for auxiliary plants related to plasma melting will be an inseparable part of the project. In particular, preparation and utilisation of syngas and utilisation of scoria, as well as specifications of the conditions for making sow containing precious and non-ferrous metals. A significant part of this project is also the fact that the proposed technology will be used for processing waste from the production of the main member - SAFINA, A.S. It will help minimising waste that is currently unusable. Keywords: plasma
