Customised olive oil metallic bottle

A metal bottle for the olive oil market. Using tin plate and innovative shaping technology, we will reproduce a glass bottle shape. Lighter than glass, it can reduce transport costs by up to 25%, indirectly offering environmental benefits.

C.OL.O.M.BO, is a Customised Olive Oil Metal Bottle. * Customised: because these packages must be easily identifiable with the brand name and with the product. * Olive Oil: because we started thinking about this project and investigating the possibility of supplying the Olive Oil market with an alternative package to the glass bottle. * Metallic: because we are sure that metal packaging is better than the other different materials (plastic, glass, tetra pack) for olive oil. * Bottle: because we want to use these cans on the same filling lines currently used by our customers to fill and close the glass bottles. The target of the project is to produce a number of families of low volume packaging similar to the glass bottle. The families will be composed of different volume cans of 500 ml, 750 ml and 1 litre. The C.OL.O.M.BO metal packaging will be usable by our customers without any investments on the filling lines. Nowadays, normally filling factories for olive oil production have different filling lines depending on the packaging used. If for some reason they are using the same filling line, to move from one packaging to another, the operator has to set up the lines. This operation is very time-consuming. INNOVATIVE PACKAGING. The new can will be shaped as a glass bottle. It will be done by seaming three pieces of metal: a bottom, a body and a lid. While the bottom will have a regular diameter of 65 mm, both the body and the lid will show innovative solutions for their production. The body will be obtained starting from a cylinder and then expanding it to obtain a square section of the body. The two ends of the body still remain circular, not reducing the speed of the assembling line. The hardest task will be obtaining the lid. It will be projected on the same shape of the neck of the glass bottle. Using tin plate is not like using aluminium, and dip drawing the material is not so easy. We consider that we will need roughly 11 or 12 operations to obtain, starting from a circular disc, a final necked lid. The lid will be treated with a special machine to obtain the screw for the closure cap. ENVIRONMENTAL AND COST BENEFITS. Due to the light weight of the metal canister compared to the glass bottle and due to the high volumes of olive oil exportation, C.OL.O.M.BO can offer a very high cost-saving for olive oil producers and give environmental benefits. In fact, the weight of C.OL.O.M.BO will be less than one quarter of the total weight of a similar capacity glass bottle. Containers and trucks for transportation of oil are normally filled by weight and not because of the volume. It means that with these reductions of weight, the filler can save up to 25% of the transport costs (considering that in 2005 the countries of the EUROPEAN COMMUNITY exported 346,500 tons of olive oil). Looking at the same aspect from another point of view, we consider that with lower weight packaging we can transport more products per each transported ton. With C.OL.O.M.BO we can offer the market new, highly efficient packaging. INCREASING THE QUALITY OF THE PRODUCT. Unlike wine, olive oil does not improve with age. It is best used within a year and a half of bottling. After this it may begin to start to show signs of oxidation and an evident loss of quality. In order to guarantee longevity and quality, olive oil should always be stored away from heat, light and air. Both glass and metal packaging can protect the product from the air and reduce the chance of oil oxidation (considering that PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) packaging is permeable to oxygen). However, unlike glass, tin plate cans can provide olive oil with a total shield against sunlight and UV (Ultraviolet) rays. This will protect the organoleptic properties of olive and extra virgin olive oils, ensuring a long shelf life of the product. The packaging is also unbreakable and safe for children. RECYCLING THE PACKAGING. Steel, compared to glass and PET, has several advantages in recycling. In fact steel is 100% recyclable with no loss of steel properties. The material is reused in the tin mill where it is moulded. A can always becomes a new can. In waste collecting cans are easily split using magnets. Steel is biodegradable.
