The formulation of household hygienic products, including plant extracts with anti-house dust mite activity

This project is aimed at the formulation of different essential oils extracted from local medicinal plants for use in household hygienic products. The acaricidal activity of the pure extracts and the processed products will be tested.

A. This project is being proposed to develop products with a significant anti-allergic potential, without the use of conventional petrochemical-based ingredients. In fact, the ingredients are all of vegetable/plant origin which makes the formulation/s devoid of undesirable effects hence suitable on sensitive skin (contact dermatitis) and at the same time suitable for people suffering from allergies and asthma. B. The formulation of a product has already been developed at SKAT LTD. In fact a local patent has been issued (PAT2/94) for the preparation of this product. However, in this project, we intend to go beyond this procedure and try to achieve the following objectives: - modify the active acaricidal ingredient in the washing detergent, both type and quantity, and - increase the range of applications to widen the applicability of the acaricidal ingredients in several other household products. C. The project will tackle the proposed product development from both ecological and social aspects. From the ecological point-of-view, the proposed products are targeted towards the market as green products with the eventual acquisition of the eco label, etc. The social aspect has also been discussed previously. This will be aimed at improving the health conditions of allergy sufferers in several ways but mainly by creating an environment free of house dust mites. As a matter of fact, the combination of these two aspects will render these products more favourable over conventional competing products, once enough publicity is carried out. It is also worth noting, that apart from the already-tested tea tree oil, other essential oils obtained from Mediterranean sources will also be investigated. This might be an added-value asset for the local or Mediterranean producer. Further to our research findings, we will be attaching literature relevant to our studies with claims proven by various scientific sources that have dealt with the subjects of dust mites, allergies, the environment, phyto-chemicals, and chemical sensitivity and irritants. D. The proposed products will be developed for the personal and household hygiene market. This is a very saturated market that is highly competitive, where unless one is continuously coming up with new trends and improved competitive products, the market momentum will be easily lost. A large share of the market is already absorbed by the large multinationals, so there is a need to create niche products to set one off from the rest. The ever increasing incidence of asthma and respiratory and skin allergies is creating the need for products that will assist in the prophylaxis of such conditions where people afflicted by these conditions seek to improve their way of life. Innovative products with a diverse purpose and safety will probably make a shift in market towards this idea. Furthermore, the product will also be publicised in fairs abroad as there have been several requests for such products. As a result of innovation, competing companies will tend to derive benefit from the idea and eventually start manufacturing their products in a similar way. However, with the range of products developed, the knowledge accumulated from this project and appropriate marketing and patenting of the methods and results, the project participants will be way ahead of their competitors with either their conventional or the possible innovative products already mentioned.
