System for using geothermal energy for public use (cooling and heating of buildings)

The project will develop drilling processes and the use of suitable equipment for drilling holes using geothermal potential, construct optimal machinery for drilling and optimise the use of geothermal energy.

In SLOVENIA and CROATIA, geothermal energy is relatively rarely used for cooling and heating of buildings in individual households in comparison with the rest of Europe. The main reasons for such low use of geothermal energy are: - Relatively low price of electrical energy, gas and oil; - High price of drilling process and equipment for using geothermal potential; - Low public awareness of the advantages of geothermal energy exploration. Our technology development project will be based on developing a drilling process for up to 100 metre (m), use of suitable equipment for drilling holes using geothermal potential, construction of optimal machinery for drilling (drilling machinery) and optimisation of the use of different energy sources for increasing the efficiency of geothermal energy use. Due to the above reasons, we have structured our drilling process into the following phases: 1. Research on the current situation of geothermal energy use in SLOVENIA for cooling and heating individual houses/households. 2. Development of optimal drilling technology for drilling of up to 100 m. 3. Development of drilling machinery and equipment for drilling process which will enable the minimisation of drilling time. 4. Optimisation of machinery for cooling and heating for the use of geothermal energy. 5. Setting up the concept for popularisation of geothermal energy use for households / concept for dissemination of results. The aim of the technology development project is to minimise the cost of geothermal use projects by developing cost effective technology for drilling and associated drilling machinery and tools. This will enable increased use of alternative energy sources in SLOVENIA and CROATIA. The project is divided equally between two partners: GEOSTROJ D.D., SLOVENIA as a main partner who will concentrate on the development of drilling machinery and tools (exploration process), and EKSPERTERM D.O.O., CROATIA as a partner who will focus on optimising the application of findings e.g. geothermal energy use for cooling and heating buildings. The technical objective is to develop cost effective drilling machinery and tools in the exploration side and to optimise the machinery and tools for application use of geothermal energy for cooling and heating buildings. The technological result is an easy to use, minimum maintenance system with optimal use of renewable geothermal energy for the project purpose. The main partner is GEOSTROJ D.D. This organisation will lead the project together with the professional guidance of a well known expert from the field of geothermal energy Dr. Zeljko Vukelic from the UNIVERSITY OF LJUBLJANA. The Project Manager at GEOSTROJ D.D. is engineer Joze Podlesnik who has more than 20 years of experience in the construction and development of drilling processes, machinery, equipment and tools. The Project Manager at EKSPERTERM D.O.O. is engineer Davorin Grzan who has approximately 20 years of experience in the construction and engineering of installations for heating, air-conditioning, ventilation and gas. The project management of both partners is relatively independent, as the two main areas are developed relatively independently, while the interconnection is carried out with the exploration/application interchange and dissemination activities which are carried out jointly. The progress of the project is discussed at regular project meetings held in Ljubljana or Zagreb. Parties share information on individual findings and verify their own progress with the other party.
