Augmented reality for architecture assessment

Aims at defining and developing an integrated software and hardware generic system for augmented reality applications. This will be tested on industrial applications, namely vehicle architecture and virtual assessment.

The needs of reducing time-to-market, improving the car design and evaluating all the ergonomic aspects of a new vehicle, starting from the early stage of its conceptual definition, are pushing automotive companies to use Virtual Assessment. All automotive companies have based their new vehicle development process on digital mock-up, virtual simulation and digital factory approach. The main scope is to supply a virtual validation of the product, reducing the needs for physical mock-up building. Many improvements have been made to reduce development cost and time-to-market through extensive use of virtual prototyping. The benefit to industry is to have tools that enable a right-first-time approach to product development. This ARi(VA)2 project aims at defining and developing an integrated software and hardware generic system for augmented reality applications, tested on two industrial applications, namely vehicle architecture and virtual assembly. The system is composed of a head mounted display system, a holographic display system and augmented reality software. This software is based on a graphic API (Advanced Programming Interface) and contains augmented reality visualisation software (real-time acquisition, field of view optical correction, virtual and real image superposition, etc.) and finally augmented reality generic applications software with high-quality animation, interactivity and exploitation functions. ARi(VA)2 is a collaborative project bringing together industrial and research partners, and is aimed at developing innovative solutions for the industry in the domain of Augmented Reality and Virtual Assessment. The main objectives are: - to study the technologies recently developed in the field of the visualisation of 3D (3-dimensional) images by holographic real-time systems for use in the field of virtual reality in the automotive industry, - to develop innovative tools using augmented reality with the composition of real images (filmed images) and virtual images (digital images) of the vehicle by using video seen through helmets in simulators. The project objectives of ARi(VA)2 will be realised through the development and validation of virtual reality technologies: software and hardware. These developments involve the following steps: - development and industrialisation of a large F.O.V helmet, - comprehensive hardware and software architectures for industrial Augmented Reality applications, - industrial application process analysis, - study of observation and virtual exploration in proximal space.
