New technology for manufacturing ceramic balls for special-purpose bearings for hostile environments

As a result of the project, special technology for ceramic balls for special-purpose bearings and technology for plasmochemical synthesis of ceramic nanopowders will be developed. This will ensure a broader application field for ceramic balls and provide significant technical impact.

The aim of the project is to develop new technology for manufacturing ceramic composite materials (balls) on the basis of plasmochemical nano-powders of silicon nitride for hybrid ceramic ball bearings for application under extremely severe conditions (high temperatures, aggressive and corrosive environments) as well as in aviation, space and other fields. This research is based on the research previously carried out at the Federal State Unitary Enterprise 'CENTRAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR MATERIALS' (CRIM, RUSSIAN FEDERATION)) on the development of ceramic composites based on plasmochemical powders using hot pressing and compression sintering. The main tasks of the project are: - Investigation of the impact of oxide sintering triggers on physico-mechanical characteristics of sintered materials by using plasmochemical nano-powders on the basis of silicon nitride; - Development of industrial technology for synthesis of optimal compositions of ceramic nano-powders; - Development of technology for hydrostatic forming and vacuum sintering of half-finished ceramic balls for bearings; - Development of technology for diamond-abrasive processing of parts of roller bearings with modern machinery; - Testing and certification of the developed ceramic compositions according to the main characteristics; - Stand and real-life testing of the bearings with ceramic balls; - Development of proposals for application of ceramic balls to valves and operating elements of hydraulic mechanisms; - Marketing research in order to evaluate the demand for ceramic balls in the RUSSIAN FEDERATION, UKRAINE and other countries, as well as their optimal nomenclature; - Formulation of conclusive recommendations. Within the project, NEOMAT CO. (LATVIA) will synthesise plasmochemical nano-powders: compositions of silicon nitride and different oxides, which serve as sintering triggers. The compositions may have different chemical properties and phase compositions. On the basis of these powders, CRIM in cooperation with VIRIAL LTD. (RUSSIAN FEDERATION) will develop the technology for hydrostatic forming and vacuum sintering of materials, manufacture samples for further mechanical and structural testing, and manufacture balls and bearings for stand and real-life tests. Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute of the RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES (IPTI, RUSSIAN FEDERATION) together with the National Educational Institution 'SAINT-PETERSBURG STATE TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE' (SPSTI, RUSSIAN FEDERATION) will provide a fundamental examination of the nano-powders as well as testing and certification using modern testing equipment. The V. Bakul Institute for Superhard Materials of the NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF UKRAINE (ISM, UKRAINE) will develop the technology for diamond-abrasive processing of parts of roller bearings as well as balls for other purposes, using special diamond tools for high efficiency grinding. The bearings will be tested at the company 'VNIINEFTEHIM' (VNIIN, RUSSIAN FEDERATION). Real-life tests will also be carried out.
