Development of evaporators with high energy efficiency

To improve the energy efficiency of display cases, new optimal geometry for evaporators and a production line for manufacturing evaporators based on that geometry will be developed.

Nowadays, refrigeration is the largest component of supermarket electric energy use. Refrigeration accounts for more than 50 percent of the annual electrical energy costs. Therefore, a reduction in refrigeration load lowers energy costs and improves competitiveness. In this context, EXKAL, with the collaboration of the Italian company COSTRUZIONE MACCHINE SPECIALI SRL, plans to investigate the theoretical geometry that can optimise the heat transfer between the refrigerant and the ambient. It will develop a range of evaporators for all the display cases that EXKAL commercialises based on that geometry. The EFIVAP consortium is formed by these companies: - EXKAL, a Spanish SME (Small and Medium-sized Enterprise), which was created in 2005 by a group of professional experts in order to influence the feeding market sector, promote change and innovation, and lead the market technologically. - COSTRUZIONE MACCHINE SPECIALI (CMS) SRL is an Italian SME that designs and produces high tech machines for the cooling, heating and conditioning industries and that takes client requirements into consideration when designing machines adjusted for their needs. EXKAL and C.M.S. will achieve two goals with the development of this project: - To increase the energy efficiency of the display cases commercialised; - To develop a new line for production of the evaporators which will diminish the life cycle cost of the display cases. The energy efficiency of the display cases will be improved by an increase in the energy efficiency of the evaporators. The geometry of commercial evaporators does optimise the heat exchange between the refrigerant and the ambient. EXKAL will develop an innovative geometry that will optimise the battery's output and energy efficiency, equipping it with a higher unitary refrigerating capacity and better partial and global exchange coefficients. After that, the results will be extrapolated to widen the range of evaporators necessary for all the display cases that EXKAL commercialises. An innovative evaporator production line will also be developed. In fact, C.M.S. will reduce the need for time and energy for the production process; the new production line developed by C.M.S. will eliminate the use of chemical products that can be injurious to the health of workers or the environment. Currently, display case manufacturers buy commercial evaporators. Commonly it uses techniques that do not allow for the manufacturing of evaporators with the quality that EXKAL demands for their products. Therefore, EXKAL has raised the internalisation of the evaporator manufacturing process; the collaboration between EXKAL and C.M.S. will make it possible to produce evaporators based on the geometry of highest energy efficiency adapted to the entire range of display cases that EXKAL commercialises. This will also make it possible to introduce technological innovations in the production process. This will diminish the environmental costs of the production process, eliminate potentially injurious substances and diminish the process energy cost. The production line that C.M.S. will develop, will diminish the energy consumption associated with the production of evaporators, providing numerous possibilities for the production of evaporators of greater efficiency than those currently commercialised. This will provide CMS with a major competitive advantage that will position it as one of the sharp shooting companies in the market of machinery for the heating, cooling and conditioning industries.
