Multimode baseband chip supporting w-cdma, edge & gprs for use in cellular devices, auto and machine to machine markets.

The aim of this project is to integrate cellular technologies and produce a multimode baseband chip that would serve the internal consumption of wavecom in its own auto and machine-to-machine products and the largest segment of cellular telephony targeted by 3g.Com technologies (israel) ltd.

This project is for the development and production of an integrated circuit for a multimode baseband chip for cellular telephony. WAVECOM SA has developed and manufactured a baseband design for GSM/GPRS/EDGE (Global Standard for Mobiles/ General Packet Radio Service/ EDGE) technology together with a complete EGPRS software protocol stack, and the W-CDMA/EGPRS version of the stack is under development. 3G.COM TECHNOLOGIES (ISRAEL) LTD has available to it the technology required for a 3GPP W-CDMA baseband design. When these two technologies are suitably combined into one integrated circuit, they will form the basis for a multimode (GSM/GPR/EDGE and W-CDMA) cellular telephone design which forms the majority of the predicted market for the next 6 years. This will be one of the end products of this project. This product will serve two main functions. First of all it will provide the functions required of a baseband chip which will decode and encode data from various applications and interface with the transceiver. Secondly by the efficient use of the microprocessor and DSP (Digital Signal Processor) on the chip, many applications will be able to be run on the chip as well. This will reduce the need for any further microprocessors and DSPs in the mobile telephone. It is expected that this product will be sold in a variety of markets which will include manufacturers of cellular telephones. In order to assist these manufacturers to use this baseband chip, we will build and supply a number of reference designs. These reference designs will consist of the baseband chip and other elements of a cellular telephone. The first use of this reference design would be to carry out tests with the baseband chip to make sure that it meets the standard requirements and a range of national radio obligations (such as RTTE in Europe). When these tests are complete, the same reference design can be made available to customers so that not only can they have confidence in the baseband chip but the reference design can also be used as a platform for their own cellular telephone. Before the chip can be put into production, the two technologies from 3G.COM and WAVECOM have to be integrated so that the two technologies work together efficiently. In addition, it will be an aim of this integration to ensure that the final product is both very power efficient and small in size. These two factors will help ensure that the final product will be a commercial success. From a market point of view, the companies target two large markets that require this multimode product: - WAVECOM will target the Vertical Application market (often referred as the combination of Automotive and industrial Machine-to-Machine - M2M) as well as some specialised terminals that may be typically used in conjunction with such M2M and/or Auto markets. WAVECOM can use the multimode chips in its products which have already been deployed in these markets where the current demand for quality & costs requires an EGPRS solution today, but the stabilisation and global deployment of W-CDMA networks will drive the demand of the dual mode W-CDMA/EGPRS cost-effective solution. - 3G.COM will target the vast market of cellular phone devices. The majority of cellphone devices expected to be sold in the coming years are predicted to contain W-CDMA as well as EGPRS wireless connectivity. There are a good number of cellular telephone manufacturers, mobile game makers and camera producers who are keen to obtain such multimode chips at an affordable price. The providers of such chips today are very few and the market prices are very high making many of the mobile handheld devices price prohibitive or attractive to a small target market. By availing a multimode baseband chip at an affordable cost to cellular phone and module makers, the price of such mobile devices can be lowered below the ‘kink point’ of the demand curve, thereby availing the promotion of such devices at attractive prices for the consumer market.
