The expert system and simulator for wastewater treatment control

The expert system for decision making support for process control of wastewater treatment will be developed, tested and applied. For educational purposes, the e-learning course for wastewater treatment plants will be developed.

The primary aim of the project is to create a complex expert system which will support operators in the decision making in process control of wastewater treatment plants. Wastewater treatment is a complex process and most operators do not have the necessary knowledge to make optimal decisions in different situations. The system, which will be developed in the proposed project, will help operators to choose correct actions in the process control. The expert system will answer questions such as: what happened, why it happened and what the operator has to do to make corrections to the process. This system will be developed in the modular form so that it will be easy to install it in existing wastewater treatment plants and to connect it with a process control system. The secondary aim of the project is to develop a simulator of wastewater treatment plants which will be used in the development of new plants and for teaching the personnel of the plant. The simulator will be able to visualise the operation and model changes of parameters of the inflow and outflow at almost all operational units, i.e. the progress of the treatment within the process. The simulator will be developed in such a form that it could be used in e-learning. In the preparation phase of the project, an analysis of needs in several wastewater treatment plants in SLOVENIA will be made. The results of this analysis will be used to develop the concept of the system and to make software requirements. During this phase of the project, the main information about different technologies used in wastewater treatment plants will be collected and organised. At the start of the project, a steering committee will be elected which will monitor the progress of the project and propose the correction activities to complete the project on time and on budget. The Volero methodology will be used as project management methodology. In the definition phase the following activities will be realised: - User analysis where several users in SLOVENIA, RUSSIA and SERBIA will be interviewed, - Conceptualisation of a project where, by using a user analysis report, the concept of the system will be developed, - Software requirement based on user analysis and concept of the product will be developed, - Development of website for the project which will be used for partner communications and promotion and marketing of the system. In the implementation phase of the project, the following activities will be realised: - Collection of empirical knowledge at different wastewater treatment plants, - Development of a software package which could be connected to an existing computer based control system or incorporated in a new system, - Development of a simulator which will be used in the education of operators, - Testing and improvement of the developed system, - Filling the knowledge database with technological data, - Pilot installation of system at the Velenje wastewater treatment plant, - Analysis of pilot system operation and its improvement, - Development of e-learning materials, - Development of e-learning centre for South-eastern Europe and NIS at Velenje.
