Low cost system for producing animated sequences of marine
environmental processes which are based on observational
data, remote sensing, in-situ and in-vitro (tank)

The objective of the project VISIMAR is to develop a low cost system to produce animated sequences of marine environmental processes, which are based upon observational data, remote sensing, in-situ and in-vitro (tank) measurements and upon empirical and determinative model concepts. Motivation: So far it is usual to present the results of models as computer drawings. But there is a need for a better visualization of the results to show the variability of the processes in time. There are four main reasons for converting scientific data into video animations. The first one is the purpose of presenting numerical results in a comprehensive way to the public. The second one is that scientists realize that video animations may help them to a better understanding and interpretation of marine processes and process interactions, and may help them in the interactive development of their models. The third one describes the teaching and training of students and the fourth one is the possibility of advertisement and marketing of the video films and of the hard and software that produces them. Project description: The development of the video animation system is divided into two parts. The technical goal is the development of a video animation device. The evaluation of the configuration shall be realized with existing technology and acceptable prizes for the system components. The hardware part of the final product will be based upon the integration of existing technology. Collaboration between participants will end up with operational application software allowing an automatic treatment of observational data and model results as well as advisable method for an efficient and didactic exploitation of the whole system. The scientific goal is the production of animated sequences of model results, the development of a suitable method for the film production and a guideline for time-dependent graphical representation.
