Fire protection in traffic tunnels

Definition and description of fire phenomena in tunnels for
rail and road traffic, in conjunction with variations of
tunnel geometry, ventilation conditions as well as quantity
and configuration of fire load

By execution of experimental fire tests, supported by theoretical investigations, basic data will be established concerning the optimal protection of human lives, as well as environmental influences and preservation of underground traffic ways and their construction components. The main part of the project consists of definition and description of fire phenomena in tunnels for rail and road traffic, i.e. in detail: - investigations on fire spread rate - temporary and local temperature spreads - development and distribution of smoke - release of energy - influence of ventilation systems - heating up of tunnel linings - heat-transmission into surrounding grounds in dependence of various tunnel lining systems - static load behaviour of various tunnel liners in fire events - escape and rescue possibilities, taking into account the heat and smoke arising - emission and concentration of toxic gases as part of the smoke. All parameters are to be determined in conjunction with variations of tunnel geometry, ventilation conditions as well as quantity and configuration of fire load.
