Euroagri (umbrella: generates projects, but does not carry out r&d)

Objective: the aim is to generate new eureka projects
in the field of the food industry and basic related sectors.

Background: During the fifth X-ray session (technology area assessment) on the EUREKA biotechnology area performed by FINLAND, IRELAND and SPAIN, one of the main outcomes was the fact that although the EUREKA projects focus upon promising areas there are still some to be covered. It was noted that most of the current projects in this area focus upon the Human health sector. The Agri-food sector (including plant production, animal production and the food industry) was identified as a very promising one for EUREKA, bearing in mind the competitiveness of the European industries in the world market as well as its diversification in the future. On the other hand, very few projects in the sector are present in the EUREKA portfolio. After having evaluated the results of this X-ray session, it was considered appropriate to start a new brokerage initiative in the Agri-food sector. Description: The main objective is to generate new EUREKA projects in this field as well as to provide the supportive measures needed. Furthermore, EUROAGRI shall try to achieve a consistent synergy and complementarity with the E.U. framework research programme, establishing channels of communication with the appropriate specific research programmes. In addition, EUROAGRI shall try to bridge the gap between technological developments and their industrial application on the one hand, and public acceptance, awareness and concern for the environment, on the other hand. Links shall be established with other initiatives as appropriate, in particular EUREKA diagnostics and EUROENVIRON. Organisation: The member's representatives to EUROAGRI are designated by their National Project Coordinators (NPCs) and are, in principle, the National EUREKA Representative (NER) and the National Project Advisor (NPA) who has knowledge of this sector.
