Surface engineering (umbrella: generates projects, but does not carry out r&d)

Objective: help catalyse the creation of collaborative r & d
projects in the field of surface engineering. This will be
done through the operation of a network of people in the
participating countries.

EUROSURF is an Umbrella initiative within EUREKA, operating in the broad area of surface engineering. Surface engineering is defined as those areas of technology concerned with the surfaces of materials and their interaction within their environment and includes coating, surface hardening and treatment, functionally graded materials, corrosion resistance and tribology. The objective of EUROSURF is to help catalyse the creation of EUREKA collaborative R & D projects. This will be done through the operation of a network of people in the participating countries. The national representatives in EUROSERF will have good knowledge of and contact with national industry in this field, and be well informed about market trends. Their role will be: - to inform organisations in their countries about EUREKA and the EUROSURF Umbrella; - to exchange information on collaborative project ideas originated by organisations in their countries; - to bring such project ideas to the attention of potential collaborators in their own countries. The Chair of the Umbrella will rotate from meeting to meeting and perhaps two meetings per year are envisaged. EUROSURF will review its operations annually to determine its value and decide if and how it should be continued; at this stage it is envisaged that EUROSURF will need to continue for perhaps three years. All EUREKA member countries are invited to participate in the Umbrella. The partners agree that countries may join or leave EUROSURF simply by informing the main contact of their wish to do so. EUREKA project proposals resulting from the activities of this network of experts will enter the EUREKA mechanism in the normal way. EUROSURF will operate with minimal bureaucracy and fully in accordance with EUREKA principles. In accordance with EUREKA principles, it is for interested organisations to propose project ideas. There is no compulsion for them to make use of the EUROSURF network when searching for partners and it is offered to them solely as a helpful service. It will be open for them to use the basic EUREKA mechanism direct.
