S-verify: advanced speaker verification

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED Authentication based on biometric features of a user is a basic security mechanism used when accessing a particular space, building, or country and for accessing protected information. After 11 September 2001, it has become a major research topic of research among many R&D groups at European, US, and Asian universities and development centers. Speaker verification is the process of automatic validation of the user’s claim that she or he is of certain identity, based on speaker-specific information included in speech waves. It enables access control of various services by voice biometrics. Despite its considerable promise, speaker verification is still not being used on a large-scale basis in public service contexts. Wider acceptance of speaker verification systems will depend on three factors: resilience to circumvention attempts, improved robustness, and more attractive pricing. PROPOSED SOLUTION The S-VERIFY project will research and develop innovative speaker verification technologies. Lack of robust session variability compensation in state-of-the art system is a major obstacle hindering a wider deployment of speaker verification techniques in secure remote authentication. The innovative approach to session variability compensation developed within the S-VERIFY project, which is thoroughly described in the project plan, will be a radically new solution, superior to existing comparable state-of-the-art solutions for authentication technologies. Special attention will also be paid to memory-footprint considerations and processing-power requirements in order to enable portability of the developed technologies to embedded systems in mobile platforms. In the final implementation phase, the S-VERIFY speaker verification system will be assembled. It will be implemented in various types biometric target applications and evaluated in the representative NIST SRE biennial evaluation. PROJECT RESULTS The S-VERIFY project will result in a new speaker verification system with advanced session variability compensation capabilities. It will provide the outline of a new commercial speech technology product – the S-VERIFY speaker verification system. MARKET OPPORTUNITIES Market introduction of the project result – the S-VERIFY speaker verification system is planned within one year after project completion. The S-VERIFY project addresses the public (vertical) sector and the IT services, telco and security (horizontal) sectors. The aim of the S-VERIFY project is to provide advanced technology for non-invasive biometric authentication, which would contribute to the safety of using e-services and applications, such as telephone shopping, information and reservation services, voice mail, security control and access to remote systems. The S-VERIFY project will provide new business prospects to all the partners involved. The robust speaker verification system in S-VERIFY will increase the sales of partner speech engines in telco, IVR, assistive applications, e-commerce, and e-banking solutions. On the embedded market, the speaker verification engine will be integrated into mass consumer products such as mobile handsets, and intelligent home automation devices.
