A data hub and data brokerage service for the highways maintenance industry (highhub)

To develop and deliver a data hub and brokerage that will allow industry players to derive efficiencies and offer new services by allowing them to gather significant real world data about the highways infrastructure and assets they manage.

The highways maintenance industry is a $48bn in the US, $6bn industry in the UK and of a similar size in Canada. It focuses on the repair and maintenance of the road network and ranges form roadway repair, drainage cleaning, winter gritting to seismic upgrades and flood amelioration measures. The industry has a small number of large companies which handle major contracts and is serviced by a significant ecosystem of SMEs. Common to most players are low levels of technology sophistication and a poor ability to reduce costs and increase efficiency by use of ITC. Recent development in real world sensing and the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) has offered an opportunity for significant efficiencies if the industry can leverage data collection and analysis to improve performance. While some of the leading players, eg Carillion or Alberta Highways are beginning to explore this area, there is a significant opportunity for technology SME's such as Sense Tecnic and In Touch to deliver advanced data gathering and analysis tools to allow the industry to improve efficiency and deliver new services. The proposed project aim to develop and deliver a data hub and brokerage that will allow industry players to derive efficiencies and offer new services by allowing them to gather significant real world data (sensed using deployed sensors, vehicle and equipment tracking, mobile sensing via in field devices etc) about the highways infrastructure and assets they manage and to pull those together into a single data hub. This data brokerage will build on existing technologies the two companies have, for example the Works order management systems and Gully maintenance system from In Touch and the Real time data hub, WotKit from Sense Tecnic. An integrated Hub and Data broker offers a number of significant benefits: -Improved efficiency via better data analysis – e.g. better maintenance scheduling -New services by exploiting data – e.g. data mashups to identify road flooding risks -Better ability to track and report contracts and KPIs – e.g. support for hand-back asset audits -Opportunity open up data to 3rd parties providing innovative new services (and revenue stream) Sense Tecnic and In Touch intend to jointly develop such a data broker and offer it to markets in the UK, Canada and elsewhere. To achieve this requires a technical development whose objectives are to: -Design and develop a cloud based data Hub suitable for the Highways maintenance industry -Develop a data analysis framework suitable for the industry -Develop a data brokerage capacity, including micro-payments and licensing support -Develop an application framework to encourage growth of a data based SME ecosystem
