Alberta's Oil Sands Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) Produced water treatment is highly challenging due to the high scaling and fouling potential and occasional process excursions. Developing a more reliable, sustainable and cost effective water treatment process is one of the key market goals. MVC evaporators are a critical step in the water treatment process, providing boiler feed water quality. Currently, the MVC evaporators have to go frequent mechanical cleaning due to scaling and fouling. The objective of this R&D project is to develop and validate an innovative evaporator design and cleaning technologies, improving the operation, service and maintenance capabilities of MVC evaporators for treating oil sands produced water in Alberta, Canada. The joint development will focus on increasing the availability and reliability of the evaporators, providing a safer process and insuring minimal downtime. The innovative design will also include the use of unique materials of construction, developed by IDE's subsidiary, which provide greater corrosion and erosion resistance, as well as lower scaling and fouling potential. Clean Harbors will develop customized chemical blends and cleaning procedures for these materials. The R&D project will be performed in two stages: 1. A six months bench-scale Piloting program at the Alberta Innovates Technology Futures (AITF) applied research facility in Edmonton, starting August, 2013. 2. Field Demonstration of a semi-commercial evaporator system during 2014-2015 in one of COSIA's Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) operating sites.
