Research and development of advanced technologies for cae analysis and design of large dam under extreme conditions.

The target is the r & d of the necessary high technologies for large dams analysis and the development of an advanced cae software prototype to improve and optimize their design and construction, making them safer and more economical. Therefore, increasing the water resources in unfeasible places.

The project is formed by a consortium of two companies, one Spanish and one South African, each with a long history and specialists in their respective fields. The leader company, Ingeciber S.A. is a specialized CAE company from Spain with more than 28 years of experience in the CAE technologies as a developer of software (mainly for civil engineering), consulting engineering services, CAE Distribution, CAE specialized training and R+D projects. Its contribution lies in technological research and corresponding development tools, mathematical models and TICs algorithms for simulation models of the new technologies that will be researched by the consortium and will provide original and unique capabilities to a CAE software prototype for the advanced analysis and design of Large Dams. As a partner in the project the consortium includes ARQ Consulting Engineers (PTY)Ltd, a South African company providing specialized consulting services in different areas of civil engineering such as bridges, geotechnical, structures and dam engineering projects in its country and internationally. ARQ's main office located in Pretoria, Gauteng. The main technical contribution of ARQ is with regard to carrying out Research on the state of art of practice in Dam analysis and the definition and development of new required advanced technologies, such as the non-linear behavior of the different types of dam concretes, design and construction of joints, foundations, analysis and behavior of concrete and joints under seismic loads, construction stages, crack propagation, etc. ARQ will be in charge of the respective technical specifications and verification & validation of algorithms that will be developed by Ingeciber prototype. Ingeciber will be in charge of the Research and Development of the mathematical models, TICs tools simulation methods, and new simulation and original/unique features of all the above technologies defined and specified by ARQ. In addition Ingeciber will carry out the development of a software numeric prototype which will, at later stage, be the base of the development of a commercial and specific CAE software for advanced large dam analysis under extreme loading conditions and non-linear behavior including the incorporation of construction phased simulation. ARQ will research about all these required advanced features and necessary high technologies and methodologies, plus the development of the necessary specifications, verification and validation of the corresponding prototype developed by Ingeciber, which will produce a clear strategic advantage, increasing the background and technology know-how about the advanced analysis and design of large dams. The present and new knowledge gained can be used to train a graduate dam engineers. This added value will also increase the company's probability of securing work by offering dam consulting services to a broader local and international market. The prototype is thus the result of the application of both research and development work, the prototype will be equipped with advanced features such as non-linear concrete behavior of Dam, construction staged non-linear simulation, Hydrodynamic effects, advanced seismic non-linear analysis, crack propagation, dynamic non-linear joint behavior, etc.
