Rugged microtca server platform solution - standardized for customization.

Two european r&d-oriented companies have decided to collaborate in r&d to promote disruptive change within advanced embedded computing. The project will result in the first ever rugged microtca server platform solution - standardized for customization.

RECAB Embedded Computers AB (RECAB) and JJ Mechatronics A/S (JJ Mechatronics) have decided to collaborate in R&D and promote disruptive change within advanced embedded computing and facilitate a broad-scale conversion; from ad hoc customization server solutions to a server platform solution – standardized for customization. This collaboration is a “business through technology project” which will provide both parties access to a huge and growing common market. Apart from the technological collaboration, this project offers great synergies between the two participants and provides a unique growth potential when exploiting the main project result; the first ever rugged MicroTCA server platform solution - standardized for customization. The project participants will not be able to overcome the technological challenges of this R&D project independently nor will they be able to exploit current market needs (RECAB) or expand rapidly on a potentially larger market (JJ Mechatronics/RECAB) independently. RECAB provides high end standard embedded computers and custom off-the-shelf solutions to demanding system integrators in the Nordic market. JJ Mechatronics develops and produces mechanical solutions within electronic packaging and offers design support to their customers in the fields of EMC design, vibration/shock, conduction cooling and material knowledge. KTH, is s a technological university in Stockholm, Sweden and is one of Scandinavia's leading institutions of higher education in technology. Current trends for state-of-the-art embedded computing address the overwhelming demands to increase performance and capacity, reduce weight and size but still maintain stringent quality standards and high functionality. These demands are especially noticeable within the tech-hungry railway, maritime and aviation industries where computers are exposed to extreme operating environments. However, the progress of addressing the new market demands is slow and the breakthrough is still awaiting. The level of innovation in this R&D project is high since there is no rugged MicroTCA server platform solution on the market. Furthermore, current state-of-the-art server solutions fail to provide a complete coverage of current market demand. The main result of this collaborative R&D-project is the first ever rugged MicroTCA server platform solution - standardized for customization. The server platform solution will meet all current market demands and promote disruptive change within advanced embedded computing. With its innovative platform feature, that can easily be customized for specific business needs, the rugged MicroTCA server platform solution will substantially reduce the lead time for customizations and ultimately result in a competitive advantage for RECAB’s customers within system integration, from twelve months to two months, and increase the potential of first mover advantage. RECABS’s customers will also benefit from the reduced size, weight and cost as this will have a huge impact on market penetration and create new market segments. This will allow RECAB to increase their turnover six-fold in 3 years. JJ Mechatronics will strengthen their market position as a state-of-the-art advanced mechanical solutions provider and increase their annual sales five-fold. The product will mainly be exploited towards system integrators within the railway, maritime and aviation industries - three industries where computers are exposed to extreme operating environments and have extensive demands on technological performance and functionality. Meeting these demands, RECAB will sell the first ever rugged MicroTCA server platform solution - standardized for customization. The server platform solution will be able to facilitate future generation end user applications and withstand extreme temperatures, electromagnetic interference, shock, vibrations and humidity. JJ Mechatronics will use the existence of the hardware platform to strengthen its current market position and grow on the international market. The innovative dimension of this project is the integration of three main aspects; size and weight, performance and capacity, and functionality. The project will find a server solution design with the size and weight reduced to one-third of current state-of-the-art server solutions that will also facilitate performance and capacity that exceeds current state-of-the-art by far; bandwidth of 10Gb, graphic resolution of 4K, fourth generation Intel CPU processors, switch, management system and 1 TB of removable and exchangeable mass storage. The innovative dimension also extends to allowing the server platform to withstand extreme operating environments by being completely enclosed and by including a conductive cooling system. The end product will be innovative since it will also offer a cost benefit of approximately 50 percent and have a reduced lead time in the market - from 12 months to two months.
