Business-oriented tools for new information handling

A new generation of tools to develop, improve and adapt
business information systems to new standards and open
architecture. They will also help companies to adapt their
applications to the evolving requirements of the market.

The BOTANI project should provide a tool set for development and maintenance of business applications. The tool set will link several types of tool. Some of them enable the generation, editing and testing of all components in an application from a conceptual description. They use the most advanced technology in order to obtain the well adapted code needed for business applications while taking their specificity into account. Five tools will be developed or evolved: EPICEAS, SAPIN, CEDRE, KEYONE and VALID. Others grouped under the generic name of LARICS allow the conversion, migration or increase in quality of old applications. These tools inspect and analyse old codes to build the best conceptual description of an application. The quality of this description is fully dependent on the volume and the quality of the extracted information. The choice of a standard representation of the information and of a standard storing model (through PCTE repository) will allow the exploitation of information through better adapted tools than those that already exist for generation applications. To complete the marketing offer, a third family of tools is proposed to revamp old applications more quickly. The QUERYSPACE tool will offer this possibility. In some cases, a global reverse engineering action is not necessary and some local action allows evolution of the application to be performed without a global reorganisation of the code. So it is possible, for instance, to provide a new user interface or new data access model without breaking, updating or restructuring action on all the procedure codes. If reverse engineering tools in particular provide remodularisation and restructuring functionalities, application tools will allow for the generation of database schemas, modules operating code and commands, description and controls of interfaces. These tools will also provide a high level editor to code certain specific functions. Testing tools will complete the development of the applications environment. Revamping tools will allow the inclusion of old codes in new applications in a re-usable approach without having to re-code all the applications again. During the project, after a phase of research and marketing studies and a specification phase, a first development phase will provide the first BOTANI version of the tools. Then a second development phase will allow the completion, upgrading and/or updating of tools to propose a second BOTANI version of the tools. During the course of the project, in order to validate them, these tools will be tested on old applications brought by the customer. This validation will be terminated in the last phase and will close the project.
