New generation technology for tyre recycling using ozonation and devulcanization

The consortium mission is to merge ozone-based rubber disruption and mechanochemical devulcanisation into one technology. Waste tyres would be recycled with much lower energy demand. The resulting product could be used as a major feedstock of new rubber articles, including new tyres.

The join project will be conducted by Nizor ltd (Israel) and Gumos Technologijos (Lithuania) within the framework of consortium ( the consortium). The consortium mission is developing of disruptive technology of tyres and other rubber product recycling. The technology allows to provide maximization tyres utilization, significant reducing of energy cost of recycling. As result, implementation of the technology can bring both the economic benefit for the tyre industry player and environment contribution for the society. The technology based of two main component: 1. Ozon knife. Separation of vulcanized rubber from metal and/or textile cords of used tyres by processing them in ozone (O3) environment. Firstly, ozone containing gas is used for rubber shredding. When ozone contacts with rubber, it works like ozone knife and cuts carbohydrate connections. This shatters rubber to crumbs.; - New rubber generation. Fractionation and devulcanization of rubber using a unique mechano-chemical method and a proprietary patented chemical agent. The end result is a commodity, which has very similar characteristics to virgin rubber and it could be used in all rubber products by replacing genuine rubber. Although the waste tyres global collection rate is very high there are still several industrial, economic and social problems concerned with recycling end-of-life tyres (ELTs). A large proportion of waste tyres in EU are being used for energy recovery – although this has neutral environmental impact, the tyres could be recycled for higher value products. However, the current shredding and devulcanization technologies are expensive and inefficient. As ELTs are expensive to transport, the recycling production must use local wastes and a full-cycle production in order to be economically viable. The proposed project proposes a full-cycle recycling of ELTs into higher value products than currently possible on an industrial scale. The expected outcomes are: 1) to increase and improve devulcanized rubber production and thus lowering virgin rubber input to new products; 2) increase ELTs recycling rate in in the world; 3) increase recycling output value for companies; 4) develop a new "state of the art" tyre shredding and devulcanization product based on patented technology. The planned innovative solution will solve the problem of recycling waste tyres and using the product in new tyre production. The market for waste tyres is tightly connected with new tyre production as eventually all the produced tyres need to be reclaimed. Therefore, will be realized "a dream" of any recycling industry, when the wasted product will be completely transformed into raw material for a new similar product.
