Optimal welding parameters of sa 387 gr. 91 thick steel plates in corrosive environment

Main focus of this project is definition of appropriate welding technology of sa 387 gr. 91 thick steel plates considering conditions of elevated temperatures and pressure, accompanied by corrosive environment. Welded elbows for the steam pipelines, made of steel sa 387 gr 91.

High temperature application of thick steel plates is often associated with various issues such as, selection of appropriate welding technology, as well as, reduction of toughness and ductility accompanying high strength steels. Selection of appropriate welding technology is even more important as corrosion is designated as one of the main mechanism for crack formation. Steam pipeline that operates on medium and high pressures comprises of pipes, elbows….. Components of the steam pipeline are jointed using welding. Under the influence of thermal shocks (when inner surface of the pipeline comes into the contact with the condensate) damage in the form of fine cracks can occur. This can lead to formation of longitudinal notches, which under the corrosive environment will create cracks. It is especially dangerous if various vibrations occur during this process. Damages and fractures could be found on all components; however, experience has shown that they mainly appear on welded joints. Expected life time can only be achieved with the proper maintenance which also considers well-timed exchange of the damaged component. To meet the demand for life time extension of thermal power plant, is absolutely crucial to understand all possible issues with the steam pipelines. Main focus of this project is definition of appropriate welding technology of thick steel plates considering conditions of elevated temperatures and pressure, accompanied by corrosive environment. Welded elbows for the steam pipelines, made of steel SA 387 GR 91, should provide longer service life and better resistance to cracks and corrosion.
