PRO-Ethics

Participatory real-life experiments in research and innovation funding organisations on ethics

Eureka takes part in additional complementary projects to explore ways of optimising funding programme processes for participants and national funding bodies.

Currently, Eureka is a partner in PRO-Ethics: a collaborative project between research funding organisations examining new ethical ways to involve citizens in decision-making processes and innovation activities.

The goal of the project is to develop a comprehensive ethics framework, ethics guidelines and good practices for R&D funding organisations to more effectively manage ethics in innovation.

Special focus will be placed on engaging non-traditional stakeholders (citizens, public and semi-public caretakers, NGOs and social entrepreneurs).

The project

The ethics framework will be developed by applying learning loops and engaging in iterative discourse. As a core part of the project, research funding organisations will also test and validate the framework by carrying out 11 practical case studies and experimental pilots in three different action fields:

• Project funding
• Strategy development
• Evaluation processes

Expected benefits

The project aim is to find a balance between ensuring ethics principles of fairness, transparency, gender, privacy and sustainability, and participation of citizens in innovation programmes.

The results of the project could help streamline processes for those designing and improving funding programmes.

Eureka is a consortium member of PRO-Ethics, which is led by the Centre for Social Innovation (ZSI). The project will run for four years from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2023 and has a budget of almost three million euro.
